Astro Camp
The sixth level
students went on their trip to Astro Camp Wednesday, March 5th through
Friday, March 7th, 2008. The camp is located at the Desert Science Center
in the San Jacinto Mountains (5,600 ft. elevation), one mile from the town
of Idyllwild. It is run by an organization called Guided Discoveries. They
run a safe, fun and educational program that our students have enjoyed for
many years. The children were kept busy (and entertained) in the classes
they attended each day. They had the opportunity to build and launch their
own rockets powered by water and pressurized air. In the inflatable
planetarium they heard stories of the constellations. The students learned
about lights and lasers, telescope viewing and attended a demonstration on
universal forces. They went on a day hike as well as a night hike. During
a scavenger hunt they searched for clues to answer astronomy questions.
There was a simulation of a Mars Exploration complete with a rock wall
designed to represent climbing out of a valley on Mars. During the
“Initiatives” class the students participated in cooperative and problem
solving activities designed to build teamwork, trust, cooperation and
communication skills. The “Zip-line” was a favorite activity. After
ascending a fifty foot long cargo net to a 30 foot tall platform the
students would launch off to travel on a 700 foot zip-line to the base. It
was a fun and memorable trip for the students as well as the staff.
